Barbadians could be smoking more home-grown “herb” than ever before.
That’s because local drug pushers have turned to cultivating more cannabis here for supplying customers to counter the increasing success of the police and defence force in capturing those landing illegal drugs on the beaches and bringing them through the airport and seaport.
This is one theory being floated for the increasing discovery of more cannabis plants across the island in recent times.
In fact, between 2008 and 2012, seizures of locally grown cannabis have almost quadrupled from 5 984 plants to 21 030.
Though up-to-date statistics were not available yesterday, police public relations officer Inspector David Welch said a clear trend of more local cultivation could be seen from the numbers of sites across the island where they were seizing plants.
