CALYPSONIAN COLIN SPENCER is to take up the post of manager of the National Stadium. The new posting comes close on the heels of the veteran kaisoman’s 2010 Crop-Over song Dey Dun Wid You, a social commentary that deals with his being a full supporter of the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) but being left in the cold after the party’s resounding victory at the polls in 2008.When contacted yesterday, Spencer refused to comment; but sources indicated he would take up the new job at the conclusion of this year’s Crop-Over season.Spencer, who was the DLP candidate in the St George North constituency, losing to Barbados Labour Party (BLP) incumbent Gline Clarke, will take over the reins of the National Stadium and Netball Stadium from Michael Jules who relinquished the post over the past several weeks, after serving for over a year and a half. Jules took up the position last month of sports coordinator of the Barbados Defence Force’s Sports Programme. An entertainer and community worker, Spencer will head a staff of 30 plus, including ground staff, watchmen and relief watchmen.Spencer has also been a successful professional musician and entertainer for over 34 years, having worked extensively in the cruise industry and on the hotel circuit. He is also regarded as an active community person and has served as vice-president and coordinator of the Sheffield Sports Club in Lower Estate.Spencer, celebrating his 13th year in the Crop-Over calypso competition, is mostly remembered for his popular composition Ten Points in 1997, which took the judges to task on how they scored contestants.
