THE National Art Gallery Committee is once again partnering with the National Cultural Foundation to host an exhibition entitled Karl Broodhagen – Centenary Celebration to be held in the Queen’s Park Gallery, Bridgetown. The exhibition, which will run from Sunday, July 11, to Saturday, July 31, is being held in conjunction with the recent Tribute To Kamau Brathwaite exhibition at the same venue. Both exhibitions celebrate the birthdays of major contributors to the cultural landscape of Barbados. The centenary celebration falls at the end of the 100th birthday year of Karl Broodhagen, who is seen as one of the most notable figures in Caribbean sculpture and painting. The works to be highlighted in the show will be sourced from institutional collections such as the National Collection and the Barbados Museum & Historical Society. Some private works will also be displayed.Cultural officials hope that the exhibition will go a long way in further acknowledging the legacy of Broodhagen’s work in Barbados and the region and re-establishing some of his important cultural contributions.
