Ten-year-old Nateasha Browne has made herself, her school and family proud by winning a prize from the 16th Kanagawa Biennial World Children’s Art Exhibition.
The Westbury Primary School pupil entered the international Japanese exhibition with a drawing titled My Home and was chosen out of 23 266 entrants from 75 countries to receive a prize.
A letter from the chairperson of the Japanese-based Kanagawa Foundation, Yoshio Sugiyama, stated that the prize-winning works, including Browne’s, will be exhibited at Kanagawa Plaza For Global Citizenship in Yokohama City from July 2 to 31.
Westbury’s principal Michael Alleyne described Browne’s achievement as amazing.
“This achievement also speaks to the fact that we at Westbury Primary seek opportunities to develop our students so that they can fit into today’s world where apart from normal academic achievements other skills are very important in the success of a child,” said Alleyne.
Art teacher Cynthia Inniss Grazette said she had always noticed that Browne’s work was outstanding; while she had to push other students to complete assignments, she could always expect that “when I look at Nateasha’s [drawing] book her work will be finished”.
