Food tax ease?

BARBADIANS may be bursting at the seams, but authorities have given the thumbs down to the need for a fat tax to control people’s eating.
Minister of Health Donville Inniss and cardiologist Professor Trevor Hassell favour using lower taxes as an incentive for food manufacturers to produce healthy food.
Reducing taxation for such manufacturers was being worked on, Inniss revealed to the SATURDAY?SUN yesterday during a tour of the St John Polyclinic, now under construction.
Asked if Barbados would consider a fat tax similar to one introduced in Denmark to fight obesity, Inniss said it would be preferable in Barbados to make healthy foods less expensive. (DP/CA)
