Barbados, as the global host of World Environment Day today, has been encouraged to continue raising its voice in the international arena for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and for support in structural adjustments in facing social, economic and environmental challenges.
The call has come from Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Minister of the Environment and Drainage Dr Denis Lowe, but Lowe says the negotiations toward those objectives are not progressing well.
“Sadly, negotiations are not proceeding at a pace that is commensurate with the urgency desired by Small Island Developing States (SIDS),” Lowe admitted, calling on Barbadians to raise their voices in partnership with the Government.
Noting that Barbados and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) of 62.3 million people had been raising their voices within the United Nations’ negotiations on post-2015 climate change, Lowe said they had been calling for a regime targeted at reduction of global greenhouse emissions. (PR)
