A scrap metal company, which is shipping 400 tonnes of waste a month primarily to China, says it has the capacity to export more but has to rely on abandoned vehicles to make up its quota.
General manager of Scrap Man Recycling, Don Morris, said the Vaucluse, St Thomas company had been exporting air-conditioning units, metal roof sheeting, vehicle batteries, fridge compressors, electric motors, whole vehicles and aluminium rims, brass taps and other metal items on a monthly basis.
He said the business was operating only at 15 per cent capacity while it owned heavy-duty equipment that could process a great deal more material every day.
Based on the contract the company has with overseas clients, it cannot ship less than 100 tonnes of scrap. Â (SB/HLE)
