THIS SUMMER, SCORES of teenagers around the island will be given the opportunity to enhance their information technology (IT) skills with the assistance of LIME.LIME, Barbados’ lone full-service telecommunications provider, donated almost $50 000 and a laptop computer to the Community Development Department of the Ministry of Culture to assist with the department’s IT For Teens Summer Programme. The company’s worldwide chairman, Sir Richard Lapthorne, handed over a cheque to Minister of Community Development and Culture Steve Blackett, at the minister’s office in Warrens, St Michael, yesterday. Teenagers will come under the guidance of IT professionals for six weeks in a programme geared towards sharpening their computer skills and teaching them new ones. The programme specifically seeks to expose about 160 teenagers at 12 resource centres to the many benefits of IT. Lapthorne said that his company was pleased to be involved in the venture, sentiments echoed by LIME’s managing director Alex McDonald.“LIME is extremely pleased to be able to partner with the Government on this programme, which offers an engaging, wholesome and educational component to the long summer holidays,” he said.Blackett told the DAILY NATION that Government was always happy to see the corporate community helping finance activities that contributed to national development.“We cannot do it alone as a Government agency, so we really are dependent on the private sector to come on board . . .” (AH
