Army celebrations a public reminder

AS PART of their 112th anniversary week of celebrations, the Salvation Army held an open day, yesterday, at their Reed Street, St Michael headquarters. On display were boxed gifts, created by secretary of the Divisional League of Mercy, Captain Paula Pyle, as well as by another unidentified member from the League of Mercy Ministry.“These gifts can be given to institutions at various seasons of the year; there is one for back to school, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and one for Christmas time as well,” Pyle said.Divisional Commander for Barbados and St Lucia, Major Dewhurst Jonas, said: “We have become an integral part of the Barbadian landscape over the past 112 years and because of this we have been taken for granted, so this open day is to remind people of the volume of work we do.” Jonas said members would be visiting 11 nursing homes today(Thu July 1),  including the Geriatric Hospital, to present gifts and minister to the patients.He said there would be a concert tomorrow at Bethel Methodist Church from 7 p.m. and a rally themed A Stroll Through History, on Saturday at 3 p.m. at their headquarters.Jonas said celebrations would culminate with a service on Sunday at the National Union of Public Workers, Dalkeith, St Michael.
