The Caribbean Cup, the regional version of the Ryder Cup and a symbol of Caribbean team golf supremacy, will be resident in Barbados for the next two years.
That’s because the Eastern Caribbean team, captained by Barbados Golf Association (BGA) president Birchmore Griffith and including top Barbados players – James Johnson, Simon Proverbs, and Marcus Clarke. successfully defended the Cup during the third edition of the competition in Trinidad and Tobago.
At the St Andrew’s course, in Maraval last week, the Eastern Caribbean players posted 20 points after five rounds of competition defeating the Western Caribbean by 11 points.
The biennial Caribbean Cup, played on the Ryder Cup match-play format, brings together the region’s top golfers over three days with the Eastern Caribbean opposing the Western Caribbean for the Cesar Rivera Trophy.
The Eastern Caribbean team included players from the OECS, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and the USVI and among the other leading players were Robert Calvesbert and Erick Morales (Puerto Rico), Alderay Downes and Dave Rajkumar (Trinidad) and Adrian Norford and Raymond Percival (OECS).
The Western Caribbean team were captained by Bahamian Ambrose Gouthro and comprised players from Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Turks and Caicos.
Among them were Ben Davis Jnr and Devaughn Robinson (Bahamas), Juan Campusano and Ling Guerrero (Dominican Republic) and Sean Morris and Fabian Campbell (Jamaica).
The Eastern Caribbean also won the 2009 edition of the Cup, organised by the Caribbean Golf Association, when it was played in the Bahamas. (PR)
