PE push

OBESITY IN CHILDREN is reaching epidemic proportions in Barbados.
And paediatrician Dr Anne St John is calling for physical education classes throughout the secondary school system and at the Barbados Community College to help curb the trend.
“It really amazes me to find out from secondary school students that they stopped PE in third form,” St John said. “Everybody is not an athlete, but everybody can do something to keep fit. PE programmes must be maintained until sixth form.
“Community College should have some PE programmes, but it should be compulsory up to sixth form or fifth form in secondary school. It must be intensified within the schools . . . it should not be an option or a choice.” (YB)
