Football coaching for primary schools

St Philip and Barbados could become a power in football in the near future thanks to the combined efforts of Harlequin Hotel & Resort and Liverpool FC of England.
Last weekend, the King George V Park in St Philip was a hive of activity as the St Philip South Foundation for Education group launched a programme involving 60 young footballers from the seven primary schools in the parish with Roger Gurley and Ralph Stowe of Liverpool running the onfield sessions.
According to Carl Mapp of the foundation, “the sessions will continue indefinitely with two coaches coming down from Liverpool every two weeks.  The emphasis will be on developing and honing football skills as well as life skills such a cooperation, analysis and teamwork”, he added.
Each primary school was invited to send ten students ages seven to ten  to be part of the programme and Mapp is hoping that many, if not all, of the students will go on to become successful players and well-rounded citizens. (KB)
