THE BARBADOS SECONDARY Teachers Union (BSTU) has decided to withdraw labour from Alexandra School at the beginning of the next term and to picket the Caribbean Examinations Council’s (CXC) headquarters if certain demands are not met.
During an emergency meeting yesterday at Solidarity House in Harmony Hall, St Michael, which attracted more than 150 people, members of the union agreed that the BSTU had been patient for far too long in the ongoing saga at Alexandra School and with the CXC’s stance that 60 geography students from Foundation School have to retake the exam because five School Based Assessments (SBAs) were not submitted.
Speaking to the DAILY NATION after the “fiery” meeting, president of the BSTU, Mary Redman, said members spoke openly and passionately on both issues and they settled on four resolutions.
“The decision was that if we don’t get the type of response to these resolutions that we need to get, and get it in short order, come the third of January, 2012, the teachers at Alexandra will not be reporting for duty at the school, but instead will be reporting to the Patrick Frost Centre [BSTU headquarters],” she said.
