MINISTER OF FINANCE Chris Sinckler has apologized to the country’s two main workers’ unions for the way in which some 350 employees of Government’s Drainage Unit were dismissed last week, says union boss Sir Roy Trotman.
Sir Roy, general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union, announced this last night after a two-hour, 45-minute meeting with Sinckler, Minister of Labour and Social Security Dr Esther Byer Suckoo, and general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Dennis Clarke, at Government Headquarters.
“In so far as the Drainage workers are concerned, mwe have an unqualified apology from the Minister of Finance for the way in which this matter was handled and for his recognition that there needs to be further work to look at in re-examining this issue.
“That is not to say that some people may not in fact be required to leave that particular project,”mhe added. “The NUPW has made a very clear, very lucid and very balanced judgement on what went wrong in all of this, and the Government officials have recognized, without apportioning blame to any specific person, that they are aware that the matter has to be re-examined.”
