HIV routine test coming

HIV testing in Barbados is moving to a stage where medical practitioners will be offering the test just like any other health check.
Yesterday, behaviour change communication specialist at the National HIV/AIDS Commission, Alexis Nurse, said even though there was no mandatory HIV testing the country was moving toward the stage where doctors could offer the HIV test to everyone as a routine test.
“So that we do not start thinking only those people need to have an HIV test or only people in this age group or only people who live this kind of lifestyle. It is that everybody needs to have an HIV test and we want to make it as normal as possible so people will be offered the test,” Nurse said.
She was speaking at an HIV sensitization workshop for parents of teenagers at the St Mary’s Church organized by the Barbados Government Information Service Internal HIV Education Committee. (LK)
