MP: Crack down on expired licence drivers

THE INSTANCES of motorists driving without valid drivers’ licences and insurance are happening too often, said Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy Kirk Humphrey.

In the circumstances, a responsible Government must do the responsible thing, even if it meant protecting motorists from themselves, he declared.

The St Michael South MP addressed the issue yesterday when the House of Assembly debated the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill, 2018.

Recalling a personal incident in which members of his family were injured in a car accident, Humphrey said the liable driver had no licence and was not covered by insurance.

“And it is an occurrence that happens all over Barbados,” he noted. “This situation repeats itself on our streets and a responsible Government has to do responsible things. And, in many ways, what we are seeking to do here is the responsible thing.

“We are seeking to protect people. And sometimes to do so, you have to protect people from themselves. And we have the responsibility to make sure that those who are driving on our roads abide by the laws of this country and therefore, they should seek to have the necessary insurance,” he said.
