Barbadian sprinter Ramon Gittens reached the final of the men’s 100 metres at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Track and Field Championships in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
With only the winner in each of the five heats assured of a place in the final, Gittens secured his spot in last night’s closing event (concluded after press time) by placing second in 10.47 seconds behind Jamaica’s Oshane Bailey (10.45).
Shakera Reece was not as fortunate in her run.
She was fourth in the first heat in 11.85 seconds, only good enough for 11th overall and did not reach the women’s final.
Latoya Griffith also booked her spot in today’s finals of the women’s 400-metre hurdles with a time of 60.58 seconds, the slowest qualifying time. She will need to run a personal best to be among the medals.
Both Reece and Gittens were scheduled to compete in the 200 metres today, but their names have subsequently been scratched from the entry list.
Barbados’ hopes will therefore rest on national record-holder Justin Cummins in the javelin.
