Staff want buy-in

Workers at the financially troubled Almond Resorts have signalled their interest in buying into the hotel chain to prevent its collapse – and the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) is not only supporting them, but helping facilitate the move.
General secretary Sir Roy Trotman will hold a series of meetings with workers at Almond Beach Village in St Peter, Almond Beach Club in St James and Almond Casuarina Beach in Christ Church “with a view to getting them to commit to buying into ownership in whatever new structure we may be able to organize”.
In February he met with the workers at the St Peter property, in conjunction with Almond’s local management, to discuss the prospect of employees taking the step from stakeholders to shareholders.
Chief executive officer of Almond Resorts Inc., Ralph Taylor, also had talks with staff earlier this month to discuss a buyout proposal that would require them to give up a portion of their salary as an investment.
