Barbadian golfers?James Johnson, Simon Proverbs, and Marcus Clarke are in Trinidad and Tobago as part of an Eastern Caribbean team, contesting this weekend’s third Caribbean Cup being played at the St Andrew’s course in Maraval.
The biennial Caribbean Cup, a Caribbean version of the Ryder Cup, brings together the region’s top golfers for match play over three days with the Eastern Caribbean opposing the Western Caribbean.
The Eastern Caribbean team is captained by veteran player Birchmore Griffith, who is also the president of the Barbados Golf Association, and includes players from the OECS, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and the USVI.
Among the other leading regional players representing the Eastern Caribbean are Robert Calvesbert and Erick Morales (Puerto Rico), Alderay Downes and Dave Rajkumar (T&T) and Adrian Norford and Raymond Percival (OECS).
The Western Caribbean team is captained by Bahamian Ambrose Gouthro and comprise players from Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Turks and Caicos.
Among those representing the West are Ben Davis Jnr. and Devaughn Robinson (Bahamas), Juan Campusano and Ling Guerrero (Dominican Republic) and Sean Morris and Fabian Campbell (Jamaica).
Teams are competing for the Cesar Rivera Trophy and the Eastern Caribbean players are defending the Cup, having won in 2009 when it was played in The Bahamas.
Trinidad and Tobago are hosting the second major Caribbean golf tournament in three months, following the successful staging of the 55th Caribbean Golf Championships at the Millennium Course in August. (PR/BB)
