MINISTER OF?FINANCE Chris Sinckler has dismissed the idea of a multimillion-dollar subsidy for electricity users, saying there will be “no across-the-board, widespread subsidization of fuel”.
He made the comments in the House of Assembly yesterday after Opposition parliamentarian Dale Marshall referred to the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) suggestion that the Barbados National Oil Company Limited Group provide a $35 subsidy for electricity users.
Sinckler said the BNOCL “does not have that money”, that the BLP’s ill-conceived subsidies had almost wrecked the company and that his administration could not afford to be “reckless” in its economic policies”.
“We will try to find [measures] as we did in the Budget to relieve some of the pressure, but it has to be done in a responsible manner,” he told the House. (TY)
