The Look

Sharon Darlington is a singer/performer and former winner of the Richard Stoute Teen Talent Contest. She needs to sound great and look great so her attire plays a big role in her performances.

How would you define your personal style?
I like to blend the old and new to create my own unique style. Your style should reflect your personality.

Do you find that you follow fashion trends or do you play by your own rules?
I am aware of fashion trends but I create my own rules as I go along. It’s difficult to find exactly what I want for stage, so that’s why I design and make my own outfits for the stage.

Has your fashion sense changed over the years or has it remained the same?
Fashion is one big revolving cycle. My changes have been subtle but noticeable. The more fashion changes, the more it remains the same.

Are there any colours that you shy away from and if so, why?
I am not very fond of colours that are close to my complexion. I like to contrast my skin colour and not hide it with my choice of clothing.

As a child, were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?
My mother was a seamstress, so I was always surrounded by fashion. This was where I developed the interest in making my own clothing. Although I was always into clothes as a child, I also grew into my own sense of fashion.

How does your day-to-day life factor into your wardrobe choices?
As an artiste performing primarily at night, I try wherever possible to separate my wardrobe for stage from that of my day-to-day activities. I think an artiste should not only sound great but look great too. Singing is theatrical and your attire plays a big part in your performance.

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?
Many designers come to mind, but Andrea King and Beyoncé Knowles are very appealing to me and inspire me to create my own designs.

If you could choose one colour that should be in every wardrobe, what would it be and why?
Black is absolutely necessary for everyone. Black goes with every other piece in the wardrobe but more important, it tends to make a person look slimmer.

Five things every woman should have in her closet:
1Black dress pants
2  An evening dress
3  A jacket
4  A comfortable pair of stilettos
5  A pair of jeans
