UWI comes to countries’ assistance

THE OPEN CAMPUS of the University of the West Indies (UWI) has responded to the devastation in St Lucia, St Vincent and Dominica by sending shipments of supplies to these islands. Yesterday, officials of the campus thanked the companies and UWI staff who “contributed generously” to the appeal.
The campus sent the first shipment to St Vincent on December 27 and additional shipments to St Vincent and St Lucia on Old Year’s Day.
Meantime, officials continue to collect supplies and will send a special shipment to assist with the rehabilitation of two schools the Open Campus adopted after Tropical Storm Tomas two years ago.
The area in which the schools are located was again hard hit by the Christmas rains.
Pro vice-chancellor and principal of the Open Campus, Professor Hazel Simmons-McDonald, launched an appeal for items identified as being “urgently needed”. These include canned foods, flour, sugar, beans, baby formula, linen, toiletries, disinfectant, first aid kits, cots, water and disposable diapers for infants and adults.
Monetary contributions can be made to First Caribbean International Bank Account 10000918136, CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank (B’dos) Ltd., Corporate and RBC Barbados Bank Account 250-955-2.
People wishing to make donations or to obtain additional information can contact the Open Campus at 417-4020, 417-4021 or 417-4022. (RRM)
