A WOMAN tending her vegetable garden and animals in St George had a shock when she stumbled on a two-foot snake in the grass last Sunday.
The woman, who did not want to be identified, called the DAILY NATION anxiously to relate her story of finding the snake – albeit dead – as she went to check on her sheep.
Her son, Chinelo Holder, said the sheep “appeared frightened as it was excessively entangled in its tether and the dead snake trampled because of some flattened areas along its body”.
He said his mother called the rest of the family to take a look at the reptile before calling the Press to have it identified.
Ian Gibbs, head of the entomology section of the Ministry of Agriculture, said the creature seemed to be the flowerpot snake Ramphotyphlops braminus, but wanted to get further confirmation.
He said it fed mainly on ants and termites and often frequented flower pots, hence the name. (JS)
