The experienced Anderson Trotman spectacularly won a record seventh jockey championship at the Garrison Savannah during the Diamonds International/Crown of Light Boxing Day at the Races on Thursday.
His other triumphs were in 1995, 1996, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2011. Trotman achieved the feat by piloting Neville Isdell’s Corvette to victory in the Diamonds International/Vena D’Amore Condition Race for West Indian-bred two-year-olds over 1 570 metres.
Trotman’s record speaks volumes for his commitment and dedication. Overall this year, he won 26 races with 20 seconds and 17 thirds from 166 mounts for earnings of $532,115.
During the third season, he finished second with five wins, six seconds and four thirds from 16 mounts for earning of $131,850. Trotman had a stellar performance on November 16, booting home La Boheme, Kariba Rose, Between The Sheiks and Areutalkintome.
That was preceded by three treble wins on January 5, March 2 and August 17 with the crowning moment coming when he won the Gold Cup on Aristodemus.
“It’s a wonderful feeling. I tried really hard on Thursday to get it done,” he told SATURDAY?SPORT.
Trotman said he was grateful to Hopefield Stables for allowing him to ride outside his contract and thanked trainer Andrew Nunes for giving him rides again.
Noting his favourite horse was Apostle, Trotman urged young jockeys to “stay focused and do what you have to do”.
Rickey Walcott, who did not ride during the third season due to injury, had to settle for second position with 26 wins, 13 seconds and nine thirds from 78 mounts for earnings of $384 810.
Walcott had a sublime year with his major successes being the Tanglewood Stakes and the Barbados Fillies Guineas with Aston Martin and Vanity Affair.
He had treble wins on June 8 and August 30, highlighted by Seattle Sunshine, Sirius Black and Zaltarr.
Damario Bynoe finished third with overall statistics of 24 wins, 20 seconds and 27 thirds for earnings of $329,189 from 171 mounts.
Bynoe recorded three trebles on March 16, May 4 and 11 with Show Me The Money, Verden and Steppin Razor.
Jalon Samuel rounded out the top four with overall statistics of 112 mounts – 19 wins, 17 seconds and 13 thirds for earnings of $259 699.
