Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley will attend a meeting of the majority shareholders of LIAT tomorrow, August 17, in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Mottley and Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, who is also Chairman of the Major Shareholders, will deliver remarks. Chief Executive Officer of LIAT, Julie Reifer-Jones, will also update the shareholders on issues pertaining to the airline.

Prime Minister Mottley underscored the importance of the meeting, saying: “For LIAT to be viable, it must be recapitalised and the shareholders have to play an even more active role in the sustainability of its operations.”

She said that LIAT was extremely important to Barbados and the region and tough decisions had to be made to bring it back on track. “What has to be done is not beyond us as shareholder governments and we are keen to do whatever is necessary to ensure the viability of this airline, which is an integral part of inter-island transportation,” she stressed.

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Kerrie Symmonds and acting Permanent Secretary in that Ministry, Francine Blackman. (BGIS)
