The realignment of the zones has brought about a big change in the Obadele Thompson Zone and new champions will be crowned this evening.
Good Shepherd, the double defending champions who have had a stranglehold on this section of the Pinehill National Primary Schools’ Athletic Championships (NAPSAC) since inception in 2002, have moved to the Andrea Blackett Zone 2 Wednesday, along with St Lawrence.
Today, 642 athletes will be in action on the track and in the field at the National Stadium from 10 a.m. Among them are former queens St Catherine as well as St Philip, Boscobel and Half Moon Fort. St Patrick’s Roman Catholic will not be competing.
Overall, 3 897 athletes are registered for the tenth anniversary of the meet.
The numbers increase to 849 tomorrow at the Patsy Callender Zone 5, followed by Zone 2 (722); peaking at 868 for the Anton Norris Zone 3 and then 816 on Friday at the James Weddderburn Zone 4 meet.
Meet director Vaman Harbin told NATIONSPORT the biggest innovation for the tenth anniversary was live streaming on their website www.napsacbarbados.com and those systems were already in place.
There will also be a display clock at the finish line so that spectators can see the flash times at the end of races. He said they would strive to do better each year in organizing the challenging meet.
This is also a chance for the athletes who are vying for places on the team to the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Championships in The Bahamas from July 20 to 21 to impress the selectors.
Harbin said 60 athletes would be chosen from NAPSAC and the secondary school championships for the training squad and Barbados were looking to field a full team of 40 which would be chosen closer to the meet.
