THOUSANDS OF students participated in the annual carnival of the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Cave Hill Campus yesterday.
Enjoying themselves during the last lap of their “Kaduwival celebrations”, students in costumes danced on top of trucks, in the street and even against utility poles.
Under the theme Differentology, the celebrations started last Sunday, with the UWI Splash wet fete, followed by fashion and car shows, sports, a calypso competition and a j’ouvert (daybreak) festival.
Revellers in 16 bands partied along Spring Garden Highway yesterday and headed up to Cave Hill, where the after-party took place, bringing down the curtain on the carnival.
Revellers danced to popular calypso and soca hits from the Caribbean, mainly Barbados and Trinidad. On a hot day cooled by the breeze coming off Brandons Beach, they gyrated and consumed lots of liquids.
Scores of spectators watched the parade and a number of non-students joined the fun, to the annoyance of revellers and the security, which included police officers. (AH)
