Canada was a near carbon copy of Colombia as it related to Barbados’ fortunes on the international track and field stage.
That’s because once more the quartet of Shane Brathwaite, Mario Burke, Burkheart Ellis and Jaquone Hoyte produced another medal in the men’s sprint relay.
In Colombia, it was gold; yesterday in Toronto, the four lion-hearted Barbadians came away with a silver in the 4×100 relay at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Championship (NACAC).
Hoyte, at 20, the baby of the team, ran a blistering anchor with the quartet timed at 38.69 seconds, but could not close the gap on Canada who snatched the gold medal, clocking 38.56 secs. The former St Leonard’s student had a thrilling duel over the last 50 metres with Aaron Brown, but the 26-year-old Canadian nipped him in a tight finish.
Trinidad and Tobago collected the bronze with a time of 38.89 secs.
It was the second medal for Barbados at these games with Brathwaite capturing the bronze in the men’s 110 hurdles on Saturday. (MK)
