Stick to good building standards

A call has again been made for good building standards and practices to be employed during the construction of properties.

This appeal was made by executive director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), Ronald Jackson, who said that while Barbados was among the islands in the region with good building standards “on paper”, the major challenge his agency saw was in their enforcement or application.

Jackson’s comments were made during the presentation of a cheque for BDS$102 000 from the Barbados Community Foundation (BCF) to CDEMA’s coordinating unit on Friday at the agency’s headquarters in Lower Estate, St Michael.

Applauding BCF for the gesture, Jackson explained that the funds, which come almost a year after Dominica was ravaged by Category 5 Hurricane Maria, were expected to assist with that island’s rebuilding process through repairs to be carried out to four medical centres there.

Meanwhile, BCF project and donations coordinator Sarah Clarke said although their mandate primarily focused on assistance in Barbados, it was not unusual for the foundationto come to the aid of the island’s Caribbean neighbours, as was seen in Grenada in 2004 after Hurricane Ivan. (SDB Media)
