Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development Steve Blackett has appealed to the private sector to contribute to the building or adoption of community centres.
Speaking yesterday at the official handover of the Parkinson Community Centre to contractors for a multimillion-dollar privately funded expansion, he said there was a demand for such facilities, evidenced by the fact that activities at Barbados’ 41 community centres had increased significantly over the last four years.
Blackett also said Constituency Councils were “well on their way to making their contribution to improved governance where decisions are being made by and for the people at the community level”.
A recent installation of another batch of Constituency Councils meant that all 30 Councils had now been appointed, he said, and announced that the St Michael South-East Constituency Council would be housed in the expanded centre. (GC)
