Minister of Education Ronald Jones is calling for Barbados’ tertiary institutions and the community to do more to help Barbados’ athletes.
Speaking to the DAILY NATION yesterday after meeting with the 2012 winners of Barbados Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards Of Excellence at the Ministry of Education, Constitution Road, St Michael, Jones said he had no problem with how the physical education programme was being handled up to secondary school level but more work had to be done to further develop local athletes for the world stage.
“By and large, there is good work being done by the phys ed [physical education] teachers and the National Sports Council.
“Yes, you would like to see more resources being made available but thisis where communities can help the schools.
“When you look at the cricket, football and track and field programmes, these are the three major areas for primary schools; you can find their work is expressed in competitions every year where every child generally participates and the better athletes emerge to support the schools,” he said.
