Dozens of Pan-Africanist gathered at the feet of the Emancipation Statue to pay respect to the ancestors as celebrations to mark Emancipation Day got underway.

But Minister of Environment Trevor Prescod, a pan-Africanist, was disappointed with the numbers who took part in the walk from the Bussa Statue to the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.

Prescod said the small numbers were an indication that Barbadians still did not understand the importance of the day

The march, which was led by the Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration (Barbados) also had support from Coalition for Pan Africanists and the Commission for Pan African Affairs. There were also representatives from Cuba and Venezuela.

Barbadians from all walks of life also joined the celebrations, walking alongside Minister of Culture John King, Minister of Labour Colin Jordan and Minister of Elder Affairs Cynthia Forde.

Led by the tuk band, the group marched and danced along the ABC Highway to the songs of Bob Marley.
