UCAL’S part

UNITED COMMERCIAL AUTOWORKS LIMITED (UCAL) has a role to play in bringing down the cost of operations at the Transport Board.
Minister of Transport and Works John Boyce said UCAL and the Transport Board had an opportunity to come together “in bringing about the overall reduction in the cost of repairs to our buses”.
Boyce said UCAL was an offshoot of the Transport Board and remained the first choice in respect to maintenance at the Roebuck Street entity.
“[But] we can benefit from preferential rates – [and] I hope [Sir LeRoy Trotman], chairman of UCAL, does not misunderstand me too much.”
The minister said the private service providers had no such relationship with the Transport Board, “but at the same time they will be driven by a profit motive; not that UCAL is not driven by a profit motive, but the private providers are going to be driven [at] a different level . . . than we would expect from our partner in UCAL”.
