PUBLIC OFFICERS are in limbo as they await answers regarding lay-offs.
But no answers have been given by members of the island’s highest decision-making body, Cabinet, while the main public sector union was still without the list of those scheduled to be retrenched from today.
Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler also could shed no light on the list, stating that the list would not fall under his purview but would go to the minister responsible for the Civil Service, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.
However, calls yesterday went to the voice-mail of the Prime Minister, who said two weeks ago that the deadline for the start of the 3 000 lay-offs, postponed from January 15, would be the end of the month: today. Stuart also said that deadline was non-negotiable.
Confirming that a list of those likely to be sent home was already in existence, Sinckler would neither confirm nor deny whether the lay-offs would start today.
“It’s not for me to say. We’ll have to wait and see . . ., today is not the last day of the month,” he told the WEEKEND NATION.
