Government’s Drainage Unit is working alongside the Coastal Zone Management Unit to find a solution to the clogging of the Holetown lagoon in St James by tonnes of debris washed there after heavy rainfall.
The director of the Drainage Unit, Keith Barrow, told the WEEKEND Nation that the two groups were trying to come up with a method to “clear the lagoon and to prohibit the build-up again in the future”.
Barrow said: “The St James area and the West Coast are recognised as areas that merit serious attention, in terms of run-off. We have to come up with a viable solution that will prevent that build up again, and it will most likely involve some type of mechanical contraption.”
Barrow said the idea of a fluidiser had been put on the table as a possible solution. It would take in the debris, digest it and regurgitate it onto the beach in almost a sandlike form. (CT)
