More than $5 million may still be owed by delinquent customers of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA).
BWA Executive chairman, Arni Walters said yesterday at the Manor Lodge complex, that there were still unpaid bills going as far back as four or five years.
Disclosing that the authority serviced 105 000 customers, he said currently there were still about 20 disconnections per day.
He lamented the fact that Barbadians still saw the water bill as the “last to be paid”, and most waited until they received red notices before rushing to pay their bills.
The executive chairman, who earlier revealed that the BWA had recovered about 60 per cent of the monies owed to the company, said the money recouped had allowed them to pay a number of bills, pay expenses and, most importantly, pay wages.
He said one of the things the BWA would be paying attention to was the metering system.
“We may have to put a smart meter in place, but we will have to try it out first, because the life of the meters now is about six to eight years.”
