Smoking ban starts tomorrow

TOMORROW is the day that smoking in public places in Barbados is to be officially outlawed.
According to Minister of Health Donville Inniss, the ban comes with stiff fines for both smokers and businesses that refuse to comply, and covers rum shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and Government buildings, as well as libraries and museums.
Dr Tony Gale, who spearheaded the fight against tobacco smoke for many years, said last month that Barbados needed to do a lot more to help non-smokers than ban “lighting up” in public places.
He also said Barbados was moving too slowly after signing the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in 2004 and ratifying it in 2005. (PR)
