Khanty-Mansiysk – Barbados had a fabulous day at the 39th World Chess Olympiad yesterday in Russia, when their men’s team defeated Japan two-and-a-half to one-and-a-half, and the women chalked up their first 4-0 rubber over the Netherlands Antilles.
In the men’s match, International Master Kevin Denny and FIDE Master Delisle Warner won against FIDE Masters Shinya Kojima and Ryuji Nakamura.
International Master Terry Farley drew with Candidate Master Ryosuke Nanjo and National Champion Martyn Del Castilho lost to Ryo Shiomi.
In other matches involving the English speaking Caribbean, Jamaica battled to a 2-2 draw against Nepal and the Trinidad and Tobago men’s squad surprisingly crashed to a 4-0 drubbing against the lower rated Libyia.
FIDE Master Warren Elliott and Duane Rowe of Jamaica drew against Badrilal Nepali and Bilam Lal Shrestha of Nepal. Shane Matthews beat Keshav Shrestha to score the Jamaican only win but Uttam Raj Thapa defeated Russel Porter to equalize things for Napal.
Trinidad and Tobago’s loss against Libya was somewhat inexplicable, other than what could go wrong went badly wrong.
Tournament leader Ukraine drew 2-2 with Hosts Russia (1) to maintain their lead with 7 match points. They are followed by Russia (1), Georgia, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Defending Champions Armenia and France on 6 and a half match points. (PR)
