But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. – 1 Thessalonians 5: 4 and 5
As I write I can feel the pain and frustration of Michael Pile of Brighton Plantation, St George as thieves continue to steal his crops.
It was reported in the last SUNDAY SUN that thieves took about 45 rods of sweet potatoes, about 450 running feet – worth more than $2 000.
It is very hard for any farmer, after putting a lot of hard work and spending plenty of cash in order to produce his or her crops, for someone to steal them.
We must remember that farmers are business people like everyone else. They have bills to pay like all business people. They also have bank loans to repay. I am convinced that more than one person was involved in stealing that amount of potatoes.
I also suspect that the sheer volume of produce being taken away means there is someone big in this country behind it.
It really hurt Pile who said: “they came in here and maul the sweet potatoes. Something like this only discourages you from planting, but I can’t say I will stop, farming is in my blood.”
What are we going to do? Pile said he had spent more than $10 000 hiring people to watch over his fields from dusk till dawn for the past two months. That is a lot of money to be spending and not getting positive results.
Stealing is wrong; we must practise what we are taught by the Bible through the eighth commandment: “Thou shall not steal.”
