SIXTH?FORM became a reality at the St Michael school yesterday when classes began at the Martindale’s Road institution to the delight of principal Shelton Perkins. On Monday Christ Church Foundation will formally launch their sixth form.
They join the list of sixth form schools on the island, bringing the number to six and the intake of lower sixth form students for the academic year 2011-2012 to approximately 620.
The other sixth form schools are Harrison College, Queen’s College, Combermere and The Lodge School.
Students at The St Michael School enrolled in advanced sciences, sociology, English, business and law, were settling in to their new surroundings yesterday, and Perkins said he was pleased with their response.
Perkins was especially pleased with the introduction of law since Queen’s College was the only secondary institution which was offering that subject at the sixth form level.
When the SATURDAY SUN visited two of the three classes, teacher Pauline Ellis was conducting classes in the management of business and Caroline Kirton was teaching sociology.
Some of the students were not in full uniform due to the unavailability of ties, but eagerness and enthusiasm were evident as they took copious notes and interacted with their tutors.
Perkins was confident that the sixth form would help to boost the academic profile of the school, and also anticipated that the school’s sporting prowess would be further enhanced since the chance of losing promising athletes to other sixth form schools was reduced.
Minister of Education Ronald Jones will address the 60 new Lower Sixth students at the Church Hill, Christ Church school at 9 a.m. on Monday. (SP/KB)
