The Barbados Meteorological Department is keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Maria.
At about 11:00 a.m today, the poorly organized tropical storm was centered about 560 miles or 900km to the east of Barbados. “Maria” is moving towards the west at 22mph at 35kmh with maximum sustained winds of 45mph. On its present track, the center of “Maria” is due to pass about 70 miles or 112km to the north of Barbados tomorrow afternoon.
Although the system has undergone some weakening during the past 12 hours there is still the likelihood that it could develop into a much stronger system as it slows down over the north-eastern Caribbean.
Regardless of development, some showers, thunderstorms and occasional gusty winds will spread across Barbados tomorrow. Some flash flooding is also likely.
In addition, above normal sea swells of about 2.5-3.0  meters will accompany the system, so sea bathers and marine interests should take all necessary precautions. (PR)
