Preschool deemed illegal

THE?FUTURE of 94 children and 17 staff members at First Steps Academy Nursery & Preschool hangs in the balance as two Government agencies have served notices on the school to cease operations.
Upset principal Tilia Wilkinson told the DAILY?NATION?yesterday during an interview at the school’s compound at Neil’s Plantation, St Michael, that she was informed by both the Town & Country Planning Department and the Child Care Board (CCB) that she was carrying on an “illegal operation” because she had not received the relevant permission to operate the school.
But Wilkinson, who started the school in 2008, said when she moved to the present location in September last year, she submitted all relevant documentations to Town Planning including those for change of use of the property from agricultural to institutional.
But she never heard from that department until the notice was served. (MB)
