ARCADIA – Barbadian jockey Rico Walcott will achieve a major milestone in his young career when he rides for the first time in the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Series in California, today.
The 24-year-old will have the leg up on three-year-old gelding Broadway Empire in the US million-dollar Grade I Dirt Mile, and will line up alongside some of the finest jockeys in North America.
Walcott is the only West Indian jockey represented on the 11-race card, on the first day of the two-day series at the Santa Anita racetrack which continues tomorrow.
Broadway Empire, owned by a Randy Howg-led partnership and trained by Roberto Diodoro, won the Grade III US$400 000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park in September and the Grade III $200 000 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park, back in August with Walcott aboard on both occasions. (KP)
