Rookie Andre Walcott is in the Barbados team to contest the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC) at the Guyana International Race meet at the South Dakota circuit later this month.
Walcott, who will be on his first overseas assignment, will be at the wheel of the i-Finance Suzuki Swift GTi and pointed to take on the opposition in Group 1.
The other members of the team are Kenrick “Snappa” Husbands, Ryan Wood, Carl Bovell, Derek Herbert and Quincy Jones – all competing in Toyota Starlets – and Seth-Ross Turney, who will be at the wheel of a Honda CRX.
Qualifying will take place on November 23 and competition will take place the next day at the same venue.
“Like Walcott, Herbert is pointed for Group 1, while the others will have to wait until after qualifying to know where they will be entered, but Husbands is headed to Group 2,” Barbados Auto Racing League’s race director Roger Welch-Payne said.
Hosts Guyana Motoring Racing and Sports Club said drivers such as Mark and Doug Maloney, Mark and Kurt Thompson and Steve King were also expected to face the starter at the meeting.
The club also said that Jamaica’s Doug “Hollywood” Gore had confirmed participation in the season-ending meet and would be up against drivers such as Guyana’s Kevin Jeffrey, Andrew King, Paul and Mark Vieira, Irfaan Kalamadeen and Vishok Persaud.
The experienced Peter Rae, driving a Mazda RX7, will be part of the Jamaica contingent, which also includes Chris Campbell, George Bailey and Gary Williams.
However, it is felt in motor racing circles that the highlight of the meeting could be a showdown between Gore, in his Audi TT against Jeffrey King, Paul and Mark Vieira, and others in the main race.
The other races are expected to be equally as exciting, especially among the superbikes where Guyana’s Stephen “Valentino Rossi” Vieira will be looking to stamp his authority on the proceedings.
