Government will refund some motorists following recent confusion about the abolition of road tax.
Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced on Sunday that the decision, which was agreed to at last Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, would affect vehicle owners who paid the tax between June 12 and June 30.
There was some controversy about the issue after comments made by Minister of Transport Dr William Duguid.
“I have asked for the [road tax] numbers, the numbers are under $2 million. We have said, ‘Look, in fairness, let there be a refund for all who write the Ministry of Finance for the period of time between the 12th of June, which is the date of the Budget, and the 30th of June, when the tax came to an end,” Mottley said during an interview with veteran journalist David Ellis.
She explained: “They will just write a letter to the Ministry of Finance requesting the refund. We are saying . . . we can’t get into the details of who did and who didn’t. Write the letter. We can check and see when your time came up at [Barbados Revenue Authority] and once that is verified, then the Government will give you back 75 per cent of what you paid and the Government will retain 25 per cent as an administrative fee.” (SC)
