THE Tudor Bridge People’s Market will be opened next month, says chairman of R.L. Seale and Company Limited, Sir David Seale.
“We are going all out on getting everything ready for an opening in the first week in November. I want to see Barbadians in their thousands doing their Christmas shopping here this year,” Sir David stated.
The People’s Market is a 20 000-square-foot wholesale market that will enable Barbadians to shop for a wide range of food products in bulk, and also clothing and other household items.
The refurbished complex, which used to be R.L. Seale’s main distribution warehouse, will also feature a wines and spirits store that will stock a full range of fine wines and spirits in a climate-controlled cellar second to none in Barbados.
Sir David says the refurbishment of the complex suffered its first setback when racking imported from the United States was lost when the container ship it was on sank off St Lucia.
“On top of that, all of the check-out counters were sent to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands by mistake,” he said. “It took us months to sort that out before they finally got here.”
As a matter of principle, the People’s Market will not sell fruits and vegetables so as to avoid competing with nearby small vendors.
Another policy of the People’s Market, he adds, is to give preference in its part-time hiring to students at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill and to housewives who want to work two or three days a week to supplement the family income.
Sir David said the finished complex would provide ample parking for customers and staff. (PR)
