United Nations – Barbados may be facing the real prospect of the incidence of non-communicable diseases getting worse in 14 years’ time before improving.
By 2025, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart told a United Nations High Level Meeting on NCDs – cancer, heart and lung diseases and diabetes – yesterday afternoon, about a third of the nation’s people could be suffering from one or more of those diseases.
Hence, his call for greater international attention and assistance to deal with the NCD epidemic, especially in developing countries.
“Urgent multi-sectoral action and policy coordination are needed to achieve the prevention and control of NCDs,” Stuart said in his first address to the UN. “I wish to emphasize that it is imperative that as we go forward, critical decisions are made that include accountability, reporting and systematic feedback of outcomes.” (TB)
