The Nation Newspaper Publishing Co. Ltd contends, “We stand by our numbers, 151 900, or 80 per cent, of readers of the daily newspaper on Monday.” – November 2010 DAILY?NATION, Systematic Survey.
This blessed morning many jubilant revellers will be attending Grand Kadooment 2012. As the festivity climaxes many unsuspecting silent doctors would be readily available for healing.
Challenges that may need healing are sore feet, aching joints and fatigue. An available Kadooment silent doctor is poor-man-pork or broad-leaf thyme.
Last week I received numerous text messages, emails and calls about this phenom. It appeared as if all 151 900 readers were descending on me after reading about poor-man-pork.
I concluded that the readership of this column is swelling with unadulterated passion, renewing respect for the value of silent doctors.
What is trending about poor-man-pork? A gentleman’s testimony: “When I was quite young I was at camp and got stung by a long centipede. An elder picked a couple of leaves of this miracle plant, crushed them and squeezed the juice on to the area.
The burning sensation stopped almost immediately and it never swelled. When I was older, my nine-month-old son got stung and I repeated the procedure with the same result – as a matter of fact, my son was back to sleep in about ten minutes. Just thought I should stand up for this wonder plant.”
Another gentleman spoke about his wines and liquor which are unique and tasty. A lady who had bad hiccups related how it healed her. Recommendations:
Respiratory challenges, gas, rheumatism: a half tablespoon fresh juice.
Boils, sprains, sore feet, backaches, swelling, pain: a poultice of the leaves combined with cornmeal and grated nutmeg.
Sore throat, hiccups: one tablespoon dried leaves to one teacup of boiling water.
Most challenges: use as tea or juice.
Add it to Bajan seasoning for a healing new zesty flavour.
A Kadooment gift: two tablespoons chopped poor-man-pork, one cup watermelon, one-and-a-half cups pomegranate juice, pinch cayenne pepper. Blend and serve cold.
You have read the results. Poor-man-pork seems to be imbued with healing powers. I had never witnessed anything like the response last week since this column featured tamarind, chaya, soursop and dog dumpling.
What I witnessed was extraordinary – poor-man-pork willed her way back into the life of Barbadians.
She survived amidst the vicious rumours and skepticism that tried to reduce her to a nuisance plant.
This is the beginning of her new era – a superstar is reborn.
