Despite a $1.6 million annual subvention from Government, management at the Challenor Creative Arts and Training Centre say they have been forced to make staff redundant and pursue a rigorous restructuring programme in order to keep its doors opened.
Chief executive officer Sharon Taitt confirmed to the DAILY?NATION that they made seven staff members redundant last month and more cuts might have to be made.
However, a spokesman for the workers who were sent home said they were not pleased with the manner in which they were dismissed from the St Thomas institution – the only private facility catering to severely disabled children and adults.
“We were called to the office of the acting CEO on March 30 and told that the school was restructuring and as a result they would have to let go staff and we were handed a letter which was headed Redundancy Of Your Position For Economic and Structural Reasons.”
The spokesman added that those sent home included teachers, teachers aides and nursing aides and that all of them had more than five years’ experience at the school.
