IT’S ABOUT TO GET TOUGHER for criminals who bring people into Barbados to exploit them as sexual or domestic slaves.
Having seen some “elements” of this human trafficking in Barbados, the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) is putting together a special team of officers, who will work hand in hand with Immigration and other officials, to nip the problem in the bud.
Inspector Carollyn Blackman-Alleyne, who is spearheading the initiative, disclosed in an exclusive interview with the SUNDAY SUN that the team she was pulling together would be aggressively going after offenders, in keeping with the Transnational Organized Crime (Prevention and Control) Act 2011, and the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime and its Protocol To Prevent, Suppress And Punish Trafficking In Persons which Barbados signed in 2001.
Police have conducted raids in the past to clamp down on similar illegal activity, but the inspector declined to give any specifics on whether this would form part of the unit’s modus operandi.
